Henry continues to distance himself from the disreputable friends of his youth in an effort to gain the respect of his subjects. After a dispute with the French over territory, Henry decides to invade France. The English fight their way across the country in a bloody series of conflicts that culminates in the legendary Battle of Agincourt. Will Henry be able to inspire the vastly outnumbered English soldiers on to victory against the French? First published in 1600, this unabridged version of William Shakespeare's history play is the fourth and final in his tetralogy about the rise of the English royal House of Lancaster.",

"description": "\"King Henry V, Shakespeare's 'star of England', is generally acclaimed as the hero who won undying fame for Englishmen at Agincourt. Yet the evidence of modern research, Harold Hutchinson contends, makes this proud legend questionable. The basis of Henry's reputation has always been his conquests in France. His undoubted military skills, particularly in the siege warfare of 1417–22, cannot be denied, although Agincourt itself was a desperate gamble that was won less by good tactics than through the stupidity of the French. But the whole policy of his claim on the French throne and his continental ambitions looked back to the days of Edward III. With the gradual emergence of French national feeling in the first half of the fifteenth century, Henry's ultimate ambitions were doomed. Nevertheless, during his own lifetime, Henry's French venture accomplished a popular success which united his previously divided nation behind the throne. His diplomatic achievements are apparent not only in the Treaty of Troyes but also in his part in ending the 'papal schism'. His love of justice, despite occasional lapses, was authentic. His religiosity, strange to the modern view, was genuinely felt and, if he was ruthless in his suppression of the Lollards, he was maintaining the standards of his day. But the legacy he left his infant son, Henry VI, was even so an empty exchequer, a heredity of madness and increasingly futile war abroad: and 'the barrenness of his glory' was soon to be exposed in the Barons' Wars at home. The picture of Henry that emerges is of an efficient if conservative ruler, forced early in life to face the realities of power. At twelve he had seen his father usurp the crown; at sixteen he had led his father's forces against the risings of Owen Glendower and the Percies; and for most of his life he was never far from the brutalities of war or the machinations of diplomacy. there are glimpses of personal warmth, in his love of music, his concern for his soldiers' welfare, and his affection for his wife. But Harold Hutchinson's overriding impression is of a 'cold, ruthless, priggish' organising genius, an upholder of the hard logic of implacable justice who became for generations of Englishmen that followed 'a heroic myth'.\"-Publisher.",

Though he has retained the common touch and sense of humor he showed as Falstaff's bosom buddy in the two parts of Henry IV, he has become fiercely focused. He punishes those who have plotted against him; in battle against the French, he shows himself an indomitable leader of men; and, at the end, he conquers even the heart of Catherine, the beautiful daughter of the French king. Henry V is one of the most popular of Shakespeare's plays — partly because it brings further news of the downward-spiraling fortunes of some of the beloved scoundrels from Henry IV, and partly because it is so intensely patriotic. Who can keep dry-eyed, who can keep his or her heart from welling up, when Henry gives his great speech before the battle of Agincourt?",

"description": "The authoritative edition of Henry V from The Folger Shakespeare Library, the trusted and widely used Shakespeare series for students and general readers. Henry V is Shakespeare’s most famous “war play”; it includes the storied English victory over the French at Agincourt. Some of it glorifies war, especially the choruses and Henry’s speeches urging his troops into battle. But we also hear bishops conniving for war to postpone a bill that would tax the church, and soldiers expecting to reap profits from the conflict. Even in the speeches of Henry and his nobles, there are many chilling references to the human cost of war. This edition includes: -Freshly edited text based on the best early printed version of the play -Full explanatory notes conveniently placed on pages facing the text of the play -Scene-by-scene plot summaries -A key to the play’s famous lines and phrases -An introduction to reading Shakespeare’s language -An essay by a leading Shakespeare scholar providing a modern perspective on the play -Fresh images from the Folger Shakespeare Library’s vast holdings of rare books -An annotated guide to further reading Essay by Michael Neill The Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, is home to the world’s largest collection of Shakespeare’s printed works, and a magnet for Shakespeare scholars from around the globe. In addition to exhibitions open to the public throughout the year, the Folger offers a full calendar of performances and programs. For more information, visit Folger.edu.",

"description": "Though he was wild and rambunctious in his youth, Prince Hal has now ascended the throne as King Henry V, the cunning and ambitious ruler of England. Embarking on a campaign in France, King Henry V deftly leads his fleet into the breach in an attempt to take the French territory of Agincourt during the Hundred Years’ War. Henry V is the last of four connected plays about successive British monarchs, preceded by Richard II, Henry IV, Part I and Henry IV, Part II. Known as “The Bard of Avon,” William Shakespeare is arguably the greatest English-language writer known. Enormously popular during his life, Shakespeare’s works continue to resonate more than three centuries after his death, as has his influence on theatre and literature. Shakespeare’s innovative use of character, language, and experimentation with romance as tragedy served as a foundation for later playwrights and dramatists, and some of his most famous lines of dialogue have become part of everyday speech. HarperPerennial Classics brings great works of literature to life in digital format, upholding the highest standards in ebook production and celebrating reading in all its forms. It tells the story of King Henry V of England, focusing on events immediately before and after the Battle of Agincourt (1415) during the Hundred Years' War. In the First Quarto text, it was titled The Cronicle History of Henry the fift,[1]:p.6 which became The Life of Henry the Fifth in the First Folio text. The play is the final part of a tetralogy, preceded by Richard II, Henry IV, Part 1, and Henry IV, Part 2. The original audiences would thus have already been familiar with the title character, who was depicted in the Henry IV plays as a wild, undisciplined young man. In Henry V, the young prince has matured. He embarks on an expedition to France and, his army badly outnumbered, defeats the French at Agincourt.",
